Black Friday 2025 had people coming in droves, lining up overnight, and running in to get deals in items. Stores have tried to up their game by including giveaways to the mix, one of them being Target. After announcing their giveaway, customers came flocking in to get their share, only to be left disappointed and outraged. Other stores, such as Lowe’s, fortunately met the expectations of the customers.

Target Swag Bag
Target was a store that especially had the public in an uproar. It was advertised that customers would receive a swag bag containing high priced items for free but that wasn’t the case at all. Social media posts have shown most shoppers receiving low cost items such as UNO cards, elf lip oil, and a bag of candy.
People have explicitly expressed their disappointment and frustration with this situation and assumed better items would be given away. Although Target has stated that only the first 100 customers would receive higher priced items in their swag bag than the ones after them, it’s still not fair to those who waited after the 100th customer to receive such cheap items. The advertisement for this giveaway should have been more explicit and comprehensive to the customers or, all in all, just have provided better items in the bags. Target is a multi-billion dollar company so the least the company could have done is give away higher priced items.

Lowe’s Bucket
In comparison, Lowe provided more promising giveaways. All the buckets provided items that priced up to $100 consisting of durable tool sets and hardware. Although only the first 50 people received the bucket, at least they were worth the wait, with Lowe giving away higher quality items than Target. Along with the quality giveaways, the customers also had a chance of winning a golden ticket per store which gave them $2000 worth of credit towards appliances. The lucky winners bought appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, and washing machines.
People on social media were even saying that the bucket that the giveaways came in were more expensive than the whole Target giveaway. This goes to show that it is not that hard to supply good products for your customers.

Whether giveaways were cheap or expensive, it delves deeper into consumer behavior. The desire to receive brand items has been at an all time high with the use of social media. Consumers exhibit an inclination towards winning something for free as well as fear of missing out on limited-time offers. These company giveaways feed into this ever-growing phenomenon.
