As of October 25th, 2024, the world-renowned and best-selling Sega video game franchise, known as Sonic the Hedgehog, released their new and long awaited mainline Sonic game known as Shadow X Sonic Generations. For the past couple of years, this anticipated game is what fans have been waiting for. A new mainline 3D Sonic game that explores both open zone/world and boost levels in a way never done before. It’s clear that the Sonic Team didn't want to create another mediocre Sonic Forces experience. It seems that they have taken the fans' criticism to heart by releasing Shadow Generations two years after the much appreciated Sonic Frontiers. They took that game's criticism as well and put it to good use by implementing new game mechanics such as Shadow’s doom powers or the revamped open world White Space. Sega has truly surprised us with this faithful adaptation of Shadow’s character.

Shadow's Story Arc and Sonic 3 Movie
As 2024 is the best year to be a Sonic fan, Shadow Generations finally gives fans a serious but heartwarming character conclusion arc to Shadow’s character. With that being said, Sonic 3 also comes out this holiday season to fully flesh the character out and finally give him a purpose in a 4K cinematic movie. The movie will be releasing a couple weeks before Christmas. Both the game and the film conclusively gives him a purpose and story, rather than keeping Shadow as a spin-off side character. The game also explains Shadow’s character to newer fans in its well-crafted animated cutscenes. It gives him a sense of humanness that you can relate to as you play the game.
Not only that, but it further explains his actions in previous games with much more depth, such as Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 06. Shadow has always been a misguided person full of revenge and feelings that he can't control, due to his dark past of being born from an alien conquest known as Black Doom. However, his saving grace from these painful emotions is the granddaughter of his scientist, co-creator (Gerald Robotnik). Without giving the story away, the game beautifully manages to capture Maria (Robotnik's granddaughter), and Shadow’s relationship as he goes on a journey to stop the alien conquest, Black Doom, from taking over the world.

New Improved Gameplay and History
After the release of the much appreciated Sonic Generations back in 2011, fans have been desperately waiting for a Gens sequel or at least a new 3D Sonic game that comes close to replicating its amazing 3D boost levels. However, Sega responded by creating some of the worst Sonic Games, from all the way since Sonic 06. This includes Sonic Forces, Boom, and Lost World. The main problem with all of these games is that they tried to make a new unique game mechanic but ultimately failed, focusing too much on it instead of what makes Sonic truly special. Apart from all other 3D platformers, the speed, re-playability, and art design are all core fundamentals of a traditional Sonic game that they just could not manage. Nonetheless, Sega continued to make one final attempt at reviving the gaming franchise by implementing open zone elements into the much loved boost formula. By having both an open world formula, and a boost mechanic within a Sonic game, it seemed that Sega had finally hit the jackpot. The game was critically acclaimed before it even came out. Due to the glorious Super Sonic boss battles, amazing soundtrack/score, and new fighting abilities, the game did positively well compared to previous installments.
Moving back to Shadow Generations, the main component which really sells/makes Shadow Generations is that it implements everything Sega has learned over these years. Further improving upon the open zone idea from Frontiers, Shadow Generations takes on the same format in an open White Space area just like Generations. However, in Shadow Generations, it's fully 3D, offering collectibles and new amazing challenge stages. By also taking on new abilities just like in Frontiers, Shadow gets an array of doom powers for the player to utilize. When it comes to the boost stages they are extraordinarily made with open paths for the player to explore at any time they want.
Each and every individual boss is not only a call back to previous/much loved villains but contains an over the top soundtrack just like Frontiers had. Fast-paced quick-time events are also incorporated in every stage that fit Shadow’s new fighting style perfectly. Simultaneously, the game even offers Sonic Generations, meaning that you get two games in the same package for a price of 50 dollars. I highly recommend that you run to your gaming console or PC and purchase one of the best Sonic Games ever made.
