I’ve been listening to this band, Thornapple, for a pretty long time. Honestly, they’re probably one of my favorite bands along with Journey. They have a good amount of songs with different varieties but what I love most is the singer Yoon Seonghyeon's vocals because his voice is so distinctive. Furthermore, the instruments they use create a highly individualistic song overall.
The current members in the band are Yoon Seonghyeon, Shim Jaehyeon, Hong Dongkyoon, and Bang Joseph (last names first, first names last). The band was formed around 2009 and has released three studio albums since then.
Their debut album, 난 자꾸 말을 더듬고 잠드는 법도 잊었네, or in English, I often Stammer and Forget the Way to Sleep, was released in 2010. This album gained popularity when the members were serving their military time. After the band had become more well known, they released two other albums and songs. I know they’ve gone on concerts and tours in South Korea so it’s unfortunate that they aren’t known in the U.S.
What I love about this band is that their songs are quirky (in a good way). The vocals and instruments are unique; I don’t think you would hear this in mainstream Korean music. I also love their lyrics because it’s also very different and you can tell that the artists have put in a lot of thought and passion into their songs. Furthermore, I love rock and their songs have a lot of guitar instrumentals and drums which is amazing for me personally.
My favorite songs are Refuge, Idiot, Lion on the Shore, Blue Spring, and Night of the Living You. Honestly, all of their songs are great but I love these songs particularly.
I recommend everybody to try listening to Thornapple even if you don’t really listen to Korean music in general. Thornapple is an amazing band with great songs and unique music that I think can really open up other peoples’ music taste.
