Descended from ancient wolves, dogs have evolved alongside humans to become companions and assistants. Although descended from one species, there are hundreds of dog breeds and they vary in size, color, fur, and personality. From large Great Danes to small Chihuahuas, dogs have served as loyal companions. Personally, dogs are my favorite creatures and their unconditional devotion and loyalty to their family is remarkable. Some dogs are so loyal to their owners, such as Hachi, that their story of loyalty becomes immortalized. In this article, I will discuss why people should own a dog.

Physical Benefits

Dogs are like babies, they have to be taken care of. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell and taste so it’s pretty crucial that you take dogs outside for daily walks. Having a dog means that as an owner, you’re spending more time outside and walking around so you’re not always sitting or laying down. By playing with your dog and taking them outside daily, it makes the owner physically active, reducing joint stiffness and improving blood flow.

Mental Benefits

Having a cute companion reduces stress levels as well. Taking care of a dog improves one’s mental health by decreasing anxiety, being encouraged to partake in physical activity, and simply having another living being reduces feelings of loneliness. Many people who struggle with depression and other mental health issues find joy through their pets who express unconditional love and loyalty.

Other Benefits

Dogs have long served as service animals to humans. Sightseeing dogs guide blind people through everyday life and military dogs are able to sniff bombs and other weapons, saving the lives of soldiers. In farm life, herding dogs are efficient at keeping cows, sheep, and other livestock together as well as protecting them from predators. Although a majority of dogs now serve a purpose as being a companion, dogs are remarkable creatures that can be trained to do anything, even detecting cancer.

Conclusion

Owning a dog comes with many responsibilities because they are living beings that need to be fulfilled. However, taking the step to adopt a dog results in a lifelong companion. Dogs may not live as long as human beings, but the lessons and love they teach won’t be forgotten.
