The Most Beautiful Tradition in Sports

Stand Up to Cancer

Watching Game 4 of the World Series each year, I’m always struck by a profound and shared sense of purpose that goes beyond baseball. In the fifth inning, amid the high-energy rivalry and passion that has defined the Series, an extraordinary pause fills the stadium. At that moment, the Stand Up To Cancer program, one of the most moving tributes in sports, unfolds, and for a brief yet powerful time, every single person in the stadium is united by a cause that knows no boundaries—cancer.

When the fifth inning ends, the stadium grows silent, with fans, players, and staff rising to hold signs bearing the names of loved ones who are battling cancer or those who have sadly lost their lives to it. These signs, raised by thousands of hands, carry the names and legacies of people from all walks of life: mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, friends, and colleagues. In that silence, rivalries vanish, team loyalties fade, and a feeling of collective resilience fills the space. The energy shifts as the sport’s intensity gives way to reflection and unity. It’s no longer about competition; it’s about hope and remembrance, about standing in solidarity for those we love and for a cause that transcends the game itself.

This moment is striking because it makes it clear how deeply cancer impacts us all. No one is truly untouched by this disease—if not personally, then through the story of a friend or family member. Each sign held up represents a life touched, a story interrupted, and a reminder of the shared fight against a common enemy. Every year, I find myself overwhelmed by the sheer number of signs that fill the stands, reminding me of how widespread this impact is, and how universal this battle has become.

What stands out even more is the beauty of the unity it brings, especially in a fiercely competitive arena. Here are two teams, often embroiled in one of the most intense rivalries, with players and fans on both sides deeply committed to seeing their team win. Yet at this moment, they come together as one. It’s not about team colors or winning streaks but about honoring loved ones and fighting for a future where cancer no longer looms over families and communities. The strength of this unity—the rivals, the strangers, all standing shoulder-to-shoulder—is something rare and profound, a glimpse into the power of community in the face of hardship.

For me, no other moment in sports has come close to the emotional gravity of this annual tribute. Watching each person hold their sign with pride, grief, or hope, I’m reminded that we’re all in this together, no matter where we come from or what team we support. In a world where differences often seem to divide us, this powerful moment of unity shines as a beacon of resilience and solidarity. It’s a testament to the strength of the human spirit and a reminder that even in our most competitive and divided arenas, we can find a way to come together and fight for a better tomorrow.
